What Is Matt Into This Week? May 6th

I'm hoping that as my post count grows, I will establish some faint semblance of credibility on popular culture. Until then, my 5 faithful readers will need to trust that I am not totally fucking clueless on what I'm writing about. So looking for something new this week that won't see ad space in between 16 and Pregnant segments? I got ya covered.

In Theaters:
The Avengers: Need I sing its praises any louder?
Bully: I wish I had begun this blog upon the release of Bully. Painful, moving, engrossing, controversial, but above all else, crucial and timely. Bully may not be something you desire to see, but I beg that you do to gain insight into the world of the victimized. The movie is one of the most eye-opening and riveting movies of the year, encouraging viewers to immediately get involved.

DVD:
Pariah: A young African-American girl comes to terms with her sexuality in a household that does not accept her. The careful examination of complexities that come with sexual identity within a minority group is poignant and touching.
Garden State: An oldie but goodie. With an amazing soundtrack ("Let Go" in the airport gets me every time) and a keen, attentive look at the prozac nation, Garden State will always be a step above the rest with its bleeding sincerity.

...oh, and avoid The Vow like the fucking plague. I wouldn't wish that disaster on anyone.

Live:
Florence + The Machine is in town, and if you know me you know I've been anxiously waiting for this for two years now. Hot off my top album of 2011, Ceremonials, Flo is bringing those boastful pipes to her biggest venues yet. Fingers crossed I don't collapse when those gorgeous red locks bound onstage. (Airing live from FUSE May 8th 9 PM, Radio City Music Hall)

Music:
The new Jack White lives up to the hype, being his first release off The White Stripes. As mentioned, I'm loving last year's Yellowcard record, which is the perfect way to welcome in a bit of sunshine. Top recommendation of the week would be Marina and the Diamonds "Electra Heart". Think if Katy Perry's cotton candy "Teenage Dream" were released in the late 80s and envisioned for Broadway, to be directed by Tim Burton. She was #2 on Britain's Heatseekers chart for 2011, tailing behind my darling Ellie Goulding. Expect big things from these ladies!
